Verification methodology

What we check before publishing, what each verification label means, and why most of the current archive is marked unreviewed.

Verification states

  • Unreviewed — the record has not been checked against primary sources by the current editorial team. Every migrated legacy record starts here.
  • Verified — an editor has confirmed the central factual claims against primary or first-party sources on a stated date.
  • Disputed — a claim in the record is contradicted by a credible source, and the contradiction is described on the page.

What verification involves

For news, we trace each factual claim to a primary source: a regulator's own notice, a filing, a company statement, or on-record confirmation. Secondary reporting is used to find a story, not to substantiate it. For analysis, we check that the mechanism described matches documentation and that figures are attributed and dated. For reviews, we record what was tested, when, on what account type, and whether any commercial relationship existed.

Dating and staleness

Every record shows its publication date and last modification date. Records older than eighteen months are labelled with their age so a reader can judge how much has changed since. Prices, product terms, fee schedules and regulatory positions in older records should be assumed out of date.

Legacy archive handling

Migrated records are preserved as published. We sanitise the imported markup for safety — scripts, embeds and inline styling are removed — and outbound links are listed in an evidence table rather than embedded in the text, so you can see a destination before following it. We do not endorse those destinations and have not re-checked them.

Claims in legacy records are never promoted into headlines, summaries or page metadata. If a record contains a profit claim, price forecast or safety promise, that is flagged on the page rather than repeated.

Balance

Coverage of a company, asset or regulatory position should represent the strongest case against it as well as for it. Where we cannot reach a party named in a critical record, we say so. Read this alongside the editorial policy and corrections process.
